We heard in a previous post about how our flexible working policy positively impacted both the productivity and the mental health of one of our mental health champions, and in another we heard how a champion who struggles with mental health found opening up beneficial.
But we all have mental health – you don’t need to have a diagnosed condition to benefit from taking steps to look after your mental health – and so a critical step in removing stigma is for everyone to acknowledge this. Through doing so, we can help and encourage people to look after their mental health just as we do our physical health – proactively.
In this post, another of our mental health champions opens up about her own proactivity when it comes to mental health, and explains how talking openly with – and getting encouragement from – a senior member of User Conversion has led her to seek external support which has benefitted both her work and personal life.
“I see a therapist every couple of weeks – I don’t have a diagnosed mental health problem, but for me it’s self development; not only does it help me in my personal life, it has helped me huge amounts with my emotional resilience and problem solving within work.
It actually came about because of the 121 coaching that was introduced at work – it helped me realise areas where I could really help myself through exploring this more. When I spoke to Mark about it, he was genuinely pleased and talked about how everyone should take time to work on themselves. Having the MD be so encouraging of me spending time to improve resilience and how I deal with stress was amazing, and the therapy has completely transformed how I deal with certain things. It’s helped me see I can’t control others but I can control how I respond, and I believe that has really made a difference in terms of not letting work or other people “get to me”.
The benefits for me have been huge, and Marks response made me more open to telling people where I was on Friday afternoons. I don’t feel embarrassment or judgement, I feel proud for being proactive and challenging myself to grow – in fact I was made to feel like I’d done something positive. This is reflective of the attitude and openness around mental health within User Conversion.
It’s so important to recognise that looking after your mental health doesn’t have to start with a problem or a negative to be fixed, it’s like taking care of or improving your physical health, and I see therapy as my weekly session to look after my mental health and invest in taking care of it.
I hope that through being open about the benefits I’ve felt from seeing a therapist – and the encouragement I got from work to do so – that more people will give it a go, and see that therapy isn’t just about dealing with an issue or problem, but actually it can be a really positive and beneficial experience for everyone. “
